Resene A&DFF: Neutra - ADNZ Q&A

ADNZ is hosting a Q&A following the screenings of Windshield + The Oyler House

Windshield: A Vanished Vision

The first of our Neutra double feature, Windshield: A Vanished Vision immerses usin the 1930s to reveal an intimate portrait of a patrician couple, a leading modern architect, and the story of the ill-fated house that they create.A fascination with modernism, innovation and the rapidly evolving American building scene spurred the eccentric and delightful John andAnne Brown to commission a summer house for their family on Fishers Island, New York —a house they hoped would be a “distinguished monument in the history of architecture”.Their chosen architect was Richard Neutra and the home, named for its expansive use of glass, was one of the most innovative and intriguing of his hugely celebrated career.Through evocative home movies, and extremely detailed correspondence, the film explores the pivotal impact of the house on Neutra’s career and takes us on a journey with a couple caught between the values of their upbringings and their evolving social ideals.

The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert Retreat

In 1959, a government employee named Richard Oyler from Lone Pine, California, asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To Oyler’s surprise, Neutra agreed. Thus began an unlikely friendship that led to the design and construction of an iconic mid-century modern masterpiece. Considered the “father of California Modern Architecture”, Time Magazine put Richard Neutra on their cover in 1949, ranking him second only to Frank Lloyd Wright among America’s greatest architects. The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert Retreat explores how Neutra came to befriend this modest, small-town family, and how he was inspired by the site’s stunning desert setting, which the architect compared to the grandness of the mystical Gobi Desert.
