featuring:

Wendy Campbell

Wendy’s career started in Wellington, it was 1960 she had gained a cadetship with the Ministry of Works in the Housing Division. As part of the cadetship she attended classes in the mornings at university to complete a Diploma in Architecture. Studying alongside fellow students like Jon Craig and Gordon Moller, Wendy’s career was formed.

After a year she left MOW and went to work for Stephenson and Turner and became involved in larger projects such as the Dunedin Hospital, and the Takapuna Hotel. These projects lead her focus to move towards the interiors of building.

Getting married and family life saw Wendy work part time for a while before moving to Christchurch in 1971.

Taking a job with Gavin Willis in Christchurch, Wendy encouraged Gavin to offer a complete service, both exterior and interior, finish off people’s houses, not just to Building Permit stage. This service changed the direction of the office and cemented Wendy’s career in interior architecture.

Wendy has worked extensively across the South Island for commercial clients such as The George Hotel Christchurch, The Pines Resort Wanaka, Otago Harbour Board Dunedin, Skyline Queenstown and many private residential clients.

During her time at Gavin Willis’s office Wendy worked alongside, Steve Ansley, Graham Freeman and Grant Miles. These guys introduced her to the NZ Federation of Architectural Draughtsmen.

Wendy became a professional member in 1983, was the Chair of Canterbury /Westland branch while also being elected onto the National board. Wendy became National Chair during her time on the board and remained on the National Board until 2010. Wendy has always been involved with her regional branch wherever she has lived in New Zealand.

Wendy left Christchurch in 2001 and moved to Tauranga, and began working there and in Auckland. One of the projects that we will feature is the Waiuku Medical Centre in Auckland where Wendy designed the internal layout, fit-out and colour scheme. She has also continued to work in Christchurch for previously established clients and Ian Cumberpatch on many projects.

Wendy now lives and works Kapiti north of Wellington but is looking forward to coming back to Christchurch to talk to us about her expansive career and passion for world of interior architecture.
