Enjoy a 3-course dinner with drinks and warmly welcome our guest speaker for the evening - John and Dorothy Wakeling from the Sculpture Park.

Dorothy and John bought the 17.5ha property that was a greywacke quarry in 1991 with one big mission: to rehabilitate the derelict land by planting an arboretum that would include globally diverse trees and plants including 3.5 ha of NZ natives. In 2011 they joined the Emissions Trading Scheme so the arboretum is now protected for 50 years to absorb carbon out of the atmosphere in order to slow down climate change.

Since they started the project, they have planted more than 30,000 trees. Then, in 2003, Waitakaruru held its first sculpture exhibition. In 2020 they handed the operation of the park over to the Art-in-Nature Arboretum Trust. Now, more than 100 sculptures can be viewed on a 2km loop walk and a variety of events are held at the park.
