Patsy Bass, Founder and Chief Executive Reefton Distilling Co.
Patsy was born in Reefton and remembers the simplicity of life on the West Coast, adventures in the rainforest, riding horses and sipping on milkshakes at the milk bar.
Patsy’s parents moved to Christchurch after the Inangahua Earthquake in 1968, but they were so homesick that the family came back every school holiday, long weekend, and times in between until Patsy was 16, so she still feels that she grew up there.
Her love of the region has been a constant and decades later when Patsy’s work as a project manager saw her return home with her husband Shane Thrower, they began to look for ways that they could contribute to the revitalisation of the town she loved. Reefton, like much of the West Coast, had seen job opportunities dwindle after the closure of the mines and logging and Patsy wanted to create something that would create jobs, develop a tourist attraction, encourage people to visit the town and stay. Having spent her early years living on the site of the Westland Brewery, even as a non-drinker but with a desire to ‘make the West Coast rain sexy’, establishing a distillery seemed a natural step.
Having raised the money for the seed capital via an investment offer, they opened their doors in a historic former general store in October 2018. With the first batch of Little Biddy Gin – Classic a sell-out success, their small batch distilled premium spirits have gone on to win a raft of awards nationally and internationally.
From concept to a $10M business in just over two years, employing 20 staff and currently fitting out their newly purchased 1ha distillery on the edge of town, - it’s fair to say Patsy gets things done.
