After a year of many challenges, Defign magazine, Architectural Designers New Zealand’s magazine, is back for your annual dose of escapism with some truly inspirational architecture.
2020 provided New Zealanders with the opportunity to consider the importance of their home and what this means to them, igniting a renewed passion for architecture.
This year’s award programme has brought to the forefront the designers who’re answering the call for improved sustainability, repurposing of materials and buildings, efficient use of space, and a focus on the quality of living in social housing.
With more people conscious about the impact of the way we live on our environment and society, seeing design professionals adapting and innovating is inspiring to see.
In this issue of Defign we’ve taken a look at some of the innovative designs to come out of the 2020 ADNZ Resene Awards. Showcased on our cover and in the magazine, this home designed by Nathan Taylor spans perfectly across a narrow gulley in north Dunedin. The feeling of being immersed in the surrounding tree canopy is evident through the expanses of glass used throughout the home. A great example of architecture meeting nature and working harmoniously together.
We delved into another home by Nicholas Mann which celebrates the raw beauty of an exposed cliff face. The dramatic contrast of the rugged backdrop against the simplicity and minimalism of the interior gives an interesting perspective when moving through the home.
These are just a taste of what can be found in the pages of this issue. Thank you to all Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) members who continually contribute to a better built environment in New Zealand through their passion for architecture and design, and who constantly push the boundaries of what can be dreamt and achieved.
Defign magazine is on sale from Monday 14th of December 2020 in all major retailers across New Zealand.
