Designed for a young family with a love of art and 70’s modernist houses, the overall look of this home reflects the outgoing nature of the client, and the spaces within it give them freedom to express their unique style and personality. Natural materials and large areas of glazing were used in combination with other modern materials and construction techniques to provide a home with many spaces of varying and adaptable qualities.
The low and unassuming entranceway and linear stonewall sits in juxtaposition to the higher living and lightwell ceilings providing play between the enclosed darker spaces and larger light filled areas as you move throughout the house. Timber finishes such as cladding, flooring, ceiling linings and joinery not only hit the desired aesthetic for the client, but were also favoured for their negative embodied carbon.
Judges comment:
“Inspired by the client’s desire to bring some 70’s modernist flavour, this carefully detailed family home is warm and light, and successfully incorporates high thermal and sustainable design elements by way of a selective use of materials and finishes."
