Derek Morrison is an award-winning visual storyteller primarily working in photography and film. In 2018 Derek won the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year award for his work documenting the wildlife, ocean and coastline for his ongoing Box of Light project.

Derek completes assignments for various magazines and book publishers, while also serving a variety of commercial clients in health, construction, and primary industries. He’s fascinated by society, culture, the built environment and its fitment into the natural world. Derek is passionate about the environment and believes visual communication can help to achieve positive and long-lasting change to human and societal behaviour.

Derek has published five books but counts his greatest achievement as being able to feed his family through his photography and film work. Every day he wakes and pinches himself – he’s extremely grateful to live a life exploring his passions and indulging in his creative side.

"The creative journey is a twisted road of snakes and ladders. There are wins and pitfalls in equal measure, and all the time an overriding sense of chasing rainbows. This presentation will share some details from my own story, grappling with creativity and how I deal with the perpetual need to strive for perfection."
