Project Description

Located only 200 metres from the beach, this bold Mount Maunganui home makes the most of its sunny, coastal locale. We worked closely with our clients young family with two children under five and to turn site constraints (including potential flood hazard zones and overshadowing against the boundaries) into creative solutions, with four transitioning floor levels and a chiselled, folding form to the rear of the building. Inspired by our surroundings, we chose black vertical steel cladding for the majority of the exterior to reflect the nearby port with clean, sharp lines that reference a shipping container box. Connectivity between indoor and out is emphasised with a direct view of the plunge pool from the living space, which is particularly stunning when the pool illuminates at night. Natural, earthy palettes and crisp white painted walls spread airy, beachy vibes throughout the home while its north facing orientation ensures there's plenty of opportunity for sunlight to penetrate deep into every room.
