Project Description

My clients brief was a house that would make the most of the amazing mountain views surrounding the site, able to handle the extreme weather conditions of Central Otago, suitable for the couple but able to accommodate friends & family when they come to stay . . . . oh & space to house their planes! The aircraft hangar is a Wide Span Shed design & build. My house design snuggles the hangar to create several courtyard areas that can be utilized in different ways depending on the weather direction & season. The house has a fully insulated slab, 140mm timber framing, high specification insulation in the walls & roof and thermally broken windows with argon gas & low E coating. This reduces the heat loss in the winter & keeps the house nice & cool in the summer. The house has a wide north facing verandah to limit the direct sunlight in the summer but let the low-lying winter sun into the rooms. The middle courtyard has an extractable louvered roof which can closed in winter or raining but opened in winter to let the sunlight deep into the house. The second bedroom is multipurpose with a pull-down queen-sized bed & wardrobe space that house an office desk & sewing /hobbies table. This room can also be used as a second living space or media room. All rooms have views of the surrounding mountains with circulation space at the rear next to the hangar.
