Maurice & I

Duration: 98 minutes

Maurice & I is a feature-length documentary celebrating Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney’s hugely influential architectural partnership, and their legacy that was all but lost in the devastating Christchurch earthquakes. This remarkable partnership, their approach to design and their signature use of materials transformed the face of Christchurch in 60s and 70s, and influenced their architectural peers throughout New Zealand. Within a short decade Christchurch was to shrug off its reputation for somewhat stuffy Georgian and neo-gothic architecture for a distinctive ‘brutalist’ style that was bold, modern and often controversial.

Then in 2011, almost the entire built legacy of Warren and Mahoney was destroyed. Among the buildings which suffered major damage was the Christchurch Town Hall, regarded by many, including the architects themselves, as their finest work. Internationally renowned for its elegant, brutalist form and sophisticated interiors, the Christchurch Town Hall revolutionised the design approach to performance spaces and acoustic engineering.

As the Christchurch Town Hall’s fate hangs in the balance, Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney reflect on their remarkable partnership. Maurice & I combines rare archival footage alongside exclusive interviews with Sir Miles and Maurice Mahoney, including their final interview together.

This filming at this date and time will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. Bring the team for a night out together and watch the film!

ADNZ Professional Member and Registered Architect - Greg Young

Greg is an award winning architect, and has been involved in over 20 award winning NZIA and ADNZ projects. Greg established Young Architects (initially Life Style Architecture) in 2003 as a progression of his design career, after leaving one of New Zealand’s most prominent architectural firms.

Throughout his career, Greg has gained experience in every aspect of the architectural industry, from structural and architectural draughting, steelwork and concrete fabrication detailing, 3D modelling, and design. He has worked on industrial, residential and commercial projects ranging from small baches to multi-million dollar homes. This work has included a full range of architectural genres included Gothic Revival, Arts and Crafts, and Modernism. Greg has also been involved in some prominent civic projects, including the New Zealand Parliament Buildings, and the Christchurch Town Hall.

Greg's experience has given him a thorough understanding of the "why" of architecture, as well as the "how".

Greg has been very involved in the Christchurch earthquake rebuild, working with insurance companies and on a number of community and industry groups to help the residents of Christchurch. As part of the Insurance Watch advocacy group, Greg was awarded a civic Christchurch Earthquake Award by the Christchurch City Council for acts of kindness, service or heroism during the earthquakes.
